Celebrating 50 Years of Western Motorcycles Sydney: A Legacy on Two Wheels
In 2025, Western Motorcycles proudly celebrates 50 years of delivering quality motorcycles and outstanding service to riders across Sydney and beyond. What started as a humble shop founded by Ray & Narelle Moody on 21st July 1975 has grown into one of the most respected, family-run motorcycle dealerships in the region—and the business is still run by the Moody family today.
The Humble Beginnings in St Marys
The journey began in Queen St, St Marys, where Ray & Narelle opened the very first Western Motorcycles store. With a small team and a big vision, they focused on offering friendly service, quality products, and expert advice. It wasn’t long before the shop became a well-known destination for local motorcycle enthusiasts.
Right from the beginning, Western Motorcycles partnered with Suzuki, a relationship that continues to thrive 50 years later. As one of the longest-standing Suzuki dealers in the country, the dealership has shared the road with the brand through decades of innovation, racing heritage, and trusted performance. Whilst in the St Marys store, brands sold also included Kawasaki, Triumph and Ducati.
Growth Leads to a Move to Penrith
As the business grew and the demand for motorcycles, servicing, and accessories increased, it became clear that more space was needed. The dealership relocated from St Marys to a larger premises on High Street in Penrith in 1980. This move marked a new chapter, allowing for expanded inventory and service facilities, while still staying true to the family-owned, customer-focused values that had earned them such loyalty. In 1991 Honda came on board, beginning another strong relationship that has spanned the decades.
Building the Dream on Mulgoa Road
Eventually, the need for a purpose-built space became undeniable. Western Motorcycles made its biggest move yet in October 1998— purchasing land and constructing a custom-built dealership on Mulgoa Road in Penrith, where it remains today. This modern, spacious complex was designed with both customers and motorcycles in mind, offering a large showroom, an extensive range of genuine parts and accessories, and a fully equipped service department staffed by experienced technicians.
The Mulgoa Road site represents not just a physical upgrade, but the culmination of decades of dedication to riders and the motorcycling lifestyle. It’s a place where first-time buyers, long-time enthusiasts, and families can all feel at home.
In 2010 Can Am motorcycles were added to the range, and in 2019 came the next edition of Royal Enfield. The most recent addition to the lineup, and timed perfectly with the 50th celebrations, is Beta Motorcycles. Over the years other brands sold within the current store also included Aprilia, MV Augusta, Cagiva, KTM and Gas Gas.
A Family Legacy That Endures
What truly sets Western Motorcycles apart is its ongoing commitment to the values Ray & Narelle Moody instilled back in 1975. Even after half a century, the dealership remains family-owned and operated by their daughter Laura and her husband Josh, continuing to serve with honesty, integrity, and a deep love for motorcycles.
Many customers today are second- or even third-generation riders who have grown up with Western Motorcycles as part of their family tradition. That kind of community connection is rare—and it’s something the family is incredibly proud of.
The Road Ahead
As Western Motorcycles celebrates this incredible 50-year milestone, the team isn’t slowing down. With the latest in motorcycle technology, strong partnerships with trusted brands like Suzuki, Honda, Royal Enfield, Can Am and Beta, and a continued focus on customer service, the dealership is ready to support the next generation of riders.
Whether you’re a weekend rider, daily commuter, or lifelong enthusiast, Western Motorcycles invites you to be part of their ongoing journey.
